Rachel Bower is currently working with us on a placement. Here she tells us how her career path has gone through some unique and exciting developments.
My name is Rachel, an 'Ull lass, and here’s my tale of how I went from acting to advertising.
I began with dreams of being the next Judy Garland blasting out ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ on a West End stage, but the yellow brick road led me to a different career and one which I love even more.
Originally, I started my degree in Theatre and Drama at the University of Hull wanting to be an actress. However, by the end of the three years I’d fallen in love with theatre-making and events and went on to work in these areas instead.
As time passed I became a professional events planner, working all over the country, and along with this I started to dip my ruby slipper into marketing. The skills I had from theatre-making transferred well into marketing, giving me a unique ability to be creative in this field. I worked with all social media platforms and formed blogs and podcasts, alongside writing literature for websites and printed materials. After assistant marketing Assemble Fest with Rich, I knew that I loved it and I wanted to know more, so I went back to the University of Hull (the Emerald City) and did my master’s in Advertising and Marketing.
Over the year I sharpened my skill set further with digital marketing, advertising, campaign planning, PR and buyer behaviour/ethics. My work was considered industry worthy and I was selected to pitch my campaigns to Young’s Seafood and Humdinger, both of which were very well received. In addition to this, my research dissertation was a novel idea that incorporated live stream and is being considered as a published article. Many of the university lecturers have supported me all the way through and continue to do so now with employment. If you have an interest in marketing but have a completely different background, go for it, you’ll be surprised.
My master’s has only just finished but already I have freelance work ahead and I am getting to know the industry better every day. Hull is a great place to be in after being the UK City of Culture; there are endless opportunities, you’ve just got to go for it… head over the rainbow.
I continue to push myself daily and working with Rich is great, as he allows creativity to flourish whilst keeping his eye on the prize. My dream was acting and now it’s creative marketing and advertising, with the end goal of becoming a creative manager of an agency.
I don’t need ruby slippers, the dreams that I dared to dream really will come true!
