Hello, Rich Sutherland here, founder and Managing Director of sobananapenguin. You may have seen me around; I’m 6’4” with a beard and a quiff – pretty hard to miss. If you have two minutes to spare, I'd like to talk to you about words.
I started this company on my lonesome back in 2012, providing specialisms of copywriting and social media management to small businesses in Hull. As my portfolio grew, so too did sobananapenguin’s service offering, client base and geographical reach, leading to the addition of a few part-time team members and us all getting involved in some very exciting projects. Yay!
People still know The Penguins primarily as copywriters, as we’ve written for all kinds of organisations that range from small start-ups to very large brands. The majority of our clients hire us for regular wordsmithing, requiring anywhere from a single blog post each month, to one for literally every day of the year. This got me thinking about our annual word count, as I’m also a sucker for facts and figures.
It seemed a tricky thing to estimate due to so many one-off jobs popping up alongside our monthly contracts, but I was determined to work it out, even if only to satisfy my own curiosity. In the end, the maths was actually quite simple:
In total, The Penguins currently write just over 750,000 words a year, which is a strong level of activity for a small, independent agency that works remotely. In fact, that's the equivalent of 75 copies of my dissertation that I wrote at university (it was about depictions of chivalry in Victorian art, you probably wouldn't want to read it). So yeah, not a bad figure at all... except that if you’ve met me, you’ll know that I don’t do things by halves, or even three-quarters. As a result, my New Year’s resolution is to hit the one-million-words-a-year mark by the end of 2019. Go big or go home, and all that.
If you’d like to help me achieve this goal, backslaps and high-fives are always welcome. However, what I’d really appreciate is being put in touch with anyone who might be starting a new venture or in need of marketing support to boost an existing business. Whether you add a comment below or message me online is up to you, and your insight could very well be rewarded with a pint down the pub. Hey, it doesn’t hurt to ask, right?
Our keyboards are primed for action, the skin on our fingers is tough as an old boot, and we have an epic '80s power ballad playlist ready to rock. Come at us, 2019 - bring on a million words!
