Our work as a marketing agency often means that we get to chat with really interesting and inspiring people. This month, our Digital Content Creator, Courtney, spoke with children’s author and illustrator, Nick Sharratt.
A huge fan of Jacqueline Wilson titles growing up, her heart skipped a beat when she was tasked with the job of securing a five-minute interview with the artist.
Nick’s distinctive and vibrant drawings have graced the pages of many iconic children and young adult books, including those by Dame Jacqueline Wilson, Jeremy Strong and even his own collection. After working as an illustrator for almost thirty years, Nick had a lot to say about the art of drawing, as well as some of his favourite characters.
“The best part about my job is that I get to create art for children. Kids are a great audience because their imaginations are incredible,” he enthused as we discussed his work. One of Nick’s favourite characters to bring to life is Wilson’s Tracy Beaker, the strong-willed 10-year-old girl who lives in a children’s home.
Nick is currently visiting schools and community centres across the country for his Big Draw-Along. Children are asked to bring pencils, paper and their creativity and draw with Nick as he shares his best tips and tricks.
“Everyone can draw, it just requires a bit of confidence and practice,” he tells us, and you can tell he really means it.
Whilst a childhood hero for many, Nick is also an inspiration to many adults. We are definitely feeling more encouraged to dig out our Crayolas and create something completely new.
