Shiver me timbers and pieces of eight! It's time for a nail-biting tale of derring-do with a festive twist, presented live on stage by the master storytellers at Hull Truck Theatre.
A Christmas Treasure Island is the third installment in the venue's new style of festive production, which is becoming something of a celebration amongst audience members. Rather than a panto or a simplified children's play, Truck's Crimbo shows present gorgeous sets, expertly choreographed movement, incredibly catchy tunes, brilliant humour and, of course, lashings of silliness.
The story follows crestfallen Jem and her spirited Uncle David as they embark on a "nautical but nice" adventure, thanks to a map that falls out of their copy of Robert Louis Stevenson's swashbuckling classic.
Setting sail from Withernsea, they soon find themselves face to face with pirates, a castaway, a talking parrot, oodles of gold and plenty of high seas hijinx.
Those who came to see Cinderella (2014) and Sleeping Beauty (2015) will recognise some of the cast, who have become Truck regulars. Namely, Annabel Betts, Laurie Jamieson, Louise Shuttleworth and Nicholas Goode, accompanied by the equally talented Jack Lord and Jessica Murrain. Then there's the dexterous Shannon Rewcroft, who brings to life wonderful puppet creatures of both the four-legged and winged variety.
The result is a professional production that will delight kids and adults alike, plus if you really want to shout "he's behind you" there's an opportunity about halfway through.
The show really is something quite special. Designed in every way to give a real sense of texture and depth, this is an excellent adaptation infused with comedy and soul.
It's impossible not to become immersed in this rich and buoyant world that the creative team has whipped up, and you'll surely leave with a shanty on your lips and fire in your belly.
A Christmas Treasure Island runs until 7 January 2017 at Hull Truck Theatre. Tickets are priced £9.50-£22.50 and can be booked by calling the box office on 01482 323638, or you can book online.
