Sleeping Beauty is one of those stories everyone knows. However, Hull Truck's new Christmas show still manages to excite, entertain and enchant the whole audience.
Five magical Nannas take centre stage as they tell the audience a tale of the beautiful princess, who was cursed with a wicked spell. Never before have you seen actors with such a range of talents used on one stage. Although they sing and dance, it is their skills with a multitude of instruments that get you tapping your feet and wishing there was an album you could take home at the end of the night. The play opens with a request from the Nannas for the audience to become honorary Nannas themselves, and after they made their introductions, you will surely be more than willing to become Nannafied.
The seniors will love each song and every joke as much as the kids. There's no difficulty in engaging with the audience, no separation of jokes for children and adults. The humour is enjoyable for everyone, and people leave the auditorium asking each other who their favourite Nanna was (ours is definitely Nanna Noonoo).
Directed by Mark Babych, this is a colourful, fun, exciting, extremely clever and accessible production for everyone. Visually stunning and musically brilliant, Sleeping Beauty won’t be a show you forget, but it will be one you regret you missed.
Running until Saturday 9 January, you have plenty of time to keep the Christmas spirit alive and well. To book your tickets, call the Box Office on 01482 323638 or visit hulltruck.co.uk.
