The young actors at NAPA are a multitalented bunch, putting on shows of as high a calibre as you'll find on many London stages. With a range of popular musicals in their portfolio, this year's choice for Hull Truck Theatre's main space is the comically dark and wonderfully gory Sweeney Todd.
You surely already know the tale of the Demon Barber of Fleet Street, slicing his way through society's ranks to reach the judge that wronged him years before. Cold, bitter, methodical and efficient, Sweeney unintentionally captures the heart of Mrs Lovett whilst ceasing those of many others, resulting in a triangle of love, loyalty, dependence and mistrust that spirals into madness and oblivion.
The main cast really are superb, accompanied by an ensemble that brings songs to heart-pounding life from the initial introduction of Victorian London's streets, all the way to the final drop of blood being spilt in the gruesome bakery. Don't let the age of the actors dissuade you; this is a brilliant production that entertains as much as it sends shivers down the spine.
An essential and, quite frankly, underfunded charity, NAPA never fails to impress. Sweeney Todd is no exception, presenting a gloriously macabre and unashamedly amusing night out. Isn't it about time you paid a visit to the barber?
